Rise School- an introduction

There was a book that stopped me in my tracks. I read it three times over the summer it found me. I felt like the message of the book wasn’t for me right then, it was for me later, and someday I would lean on its truths and the themes of individuality versus conformity would call me back. And you know, it’s been almost 15 years and today it floated back to me.

You don’t read one tiny part of this book or the whole thing and not want to be Stargirl-weird, different, kind, captivating, wild, strange, and fully her own person. You don’t think ugh what a weirdo. You hope that you are not one of the normal, boring ones lost in the sea of sameness. Jerry Spinelli with all his genius storytelling gently gives you permission to be stargirl- living in the fullness of who you are, your magic, your uniqueness, and your individuality. You don’t really need to hold the weight of other people’s thoughts, judgements, or standards. You don’t have to bend to the demands of conformity and become just like everyone else. But in order to truly stay in your individuality, discover your own gifts, and find your unique purpose-you do need to exist places where you are not forced to conform. And so with that…Rise is for the “Stargirl” ✨
